ISOWEEKNUM Function in Excel

What is the ISOWEEKNUM function in Excel?

→ The MS Excel ISOWEEKNUM function returns the ISO week number from a date value.

→ It is a built-in function in Microsoft Excel, and we can put it in DATE/Time Function Category.

→ It is a worksheet function. So, we can enter this function directly as a cell value.

→ This function returns a numeric value.

→ This function follows the ISO standard for returning the week value from the date.

→ It returns a week number (1-54).

→ Where weeks begin on Monday and week number 1 is assigned to the first week in a year that contains a Thursday.


→ What is the syntax of the ISOWEEKNUM function?

→ The syntax for the ISOWEEKNUM function in Microsoft Excel is:

=ISOWEEKNUM(serial_date)


➨ The Syntax Parameter or Syntax Arguments of ISOWEEKNUM function are:

serial_date  - The serial date value from which to calculate the week number. A serial date is how Excel stores date internally and it represents the number of days since January 1, 1900.


Examples of ISOWEEKNUM Function:

→ For a detailed understanding, we will take some example as mentioned below

→ As we know the syntax of the ISOWEEKNUM Function =ISOWEEKNUM(start_date, months), So we will take an example accordingly.

Example of ISOWEEKNUM Function in Excel

Example – 01: 

→ We will take this example by using syntax =ISOWEEKNUM( serial_date ), From the above picture the formula will be =ISOWEEKNUM(A2).

→ This function will return the ISO week number.

→ So, the final result of iso week number will be = 1 

→ Because this contains the Thursday and considered from the Monday.


Example – 02: 

→ We will take another example by using a similar syntax, From the above picture the formula will be =ISOWEEKNUM(A3)

→ This formula will return the ISO week number. So, the final result of iso week number will be = 53 

→ Because the day is Friday and it is not containing Thursday so it is considered as the 53rd week of the previous year.


Example – 03: 

→ Similarly, from the above picture, we can see in the 3rd example, the return ISO week number = 52.

Because it is not containing the Thursday.


Example – 04: 

→ We will take one more example by using similar syntax as mentioned above and from the above picture, the formula will be =ISOWEEKNUM(A5). And it will return the ISO week number.

→ So, the final result of iso week number will be = 1 

→ Because the day is Monday so the week starts from Monday and it contains Thursday so it is considered as the 1st week of the year.
